Aclar® film

Aclar® film is a flexible thermoplastic made from fluorinated-chlorinated resins. These films have very low moisture vapor and oxygen permeabilities, and are ideal for packaging all types of corrosion-sensitive military and electronic items. In packaging applications, we commonly uses two types of copolymers — Aclar 22 and Aclar 33.

According to its manufacturer, Honeywell International, Aclar® film is recommended for use in oxygen-rich environments or for packaging items to be used in liquid oxygen (LOX) or hypergolic systems, meeting the NASA LOX impact compatibility requirements under MSFC106A, and the flammability requirements under NHB 8060.1C. As a key component of transparent laminated barrier constructions, it meets the requirements of MIL B22191 Type I and MIL B131 Type II.

Transparency, fire retardant properties, and good performance over a wide range of temperatures permit Aclar® film laminates to be used in difficult packaging applications, and allow inspection and verification of the package contents at any time. Aclar® also solves a number of industrial packaging challenges that require high clarity, high moisture barrier and low contamination.

Aclar® is a suitable material for controlled environments such as the orbiter and space station because it is transparent, inert, has very low outgassing properties, and is ideal for gas sampling bags. Three grades of Aclar® are available: 22A, 22C and 33C. All can be supplied as bags or sheeting, cleaned and certified to all applicable NASA and commercial cleanliness specifications.
